Notes
*****
For the past 18 months, French television has been running its own version of Pop Idol, Nouvelle Star, which features a judge nicknamed 'The Professor'. 'People say that I am cruel but fair,' he told me recently. 'I am very honest-talking, but I think I know what I am talking about.'

That is the understatement of the year. The Professor is drummer Manu Katche, who has appeared on albums by, among others, Sting, Youssou N'Dour and Tori Amos. Naturally, drum freaks hold him in high regard.

No wonder: Neighbourhood will head my end-of-year list unless something truly amazing comes out between now and December. This is music that grows on you - the beautiful, sensual sounds of Tomasz Stanko's trumpet and Jan Garbarek's saxophone weave melodic shapes while Marcin Wasilewski's piano provides the perfect counterpoint with elegant musical inventions of his own.

The next time you have a dinner party and want to appear sophisticated and chic - the ultimate urban (wo)man about town - just play 'Miles Away', 'Number One' or 'Good Influence'.
